Many retailer & product websites provide conflicting info about how to calculate the appropriate size for your household needs.  You need to have your water tested for grains of hardness.  We recommend our free in home evaluation to properly determine this for you.

To know the proper size of a water softener for your home, it is important to determine two things:

    1. Your average daily household water use (not including outdoor use).  An average person consumes about 49-60 gals. per day (186-227 liters).  These statistics can be found on your local water/utility bill.
    2. The average grains of hardness in your tap water.

WATER SOFTENER UNIT SIZE FORMULA

The formula to determine your daily “hardness” removal looks like this:

# of people in home

 X

average daily use/person

 X

grains of hardness in water

= GRAINS OF HARDNESS TO REMOVE DAILY

(This will determine the size of unit you will need for your home.)
